Nestled in Chicago’s Edison Park, the World War I Monument stands as a testament to the neighborhood’s resilience and respect. This monument, also known as the Honor Roll for Vets, has a fascinating story. It began in November 1918. A representative from the Illinois Volunteer Training Corps proposed a resolution. They wanted to create a memorial to honor Edison Park residents who served in World War I. The Edison Park District, which managed the park before the Chicago Park District’s formation in 1934, embraced the idea. The monument’s centerpiece is a Corinthian column. It was salvaged from the old Cook County courthouse, demolished in 1906. Atop this column, a limestone eagle perches on a globe, a symbol of vigilance and global impact. This striking monument was completed in the summer of 1919. The park itself, originally called Ridge Lawn Park, was then renamed Monument Park to honor the new memorial. The World War I Monument weathered more than just time. Vandals, at some point, damaged the eagle, breaking the tips of its wings. For decades, the monument bore these scars. Finally, in 2008, the Chicago Park District undertook a restoration project. They cleaned and repaired the stonework, meticulously recreated the eagle’s broken wings, and restored the original zinc plaque. They also enhanced the landscaping around the monument, giving it the respectful setting it deserved. The World War I Monument in Monument Park isn’t just a static structure. It’s a living testament to the sacrifices made by the people of Edison Park during a world-altering conflict.
