Ever wondered about the history hiding just behind Auckland’s bustling CBD? Today we are standing in front of The Strand Station. This station has a fascinating story. It’s a tale of railways, rugby, and remarkable resilience.
The Strand Station, also known as Auckland Strand Station, sits on the eastern edge of the city center. It acts as Auckland’s long-distance railway station. It is the place where journeys to Wellington and Hamilton begin.
Originally, these platforms were part of the Auckland Railway Station complex. The Auckland Railway Station opened in 1930 on Beach Road. It replaced the old terminus at Queen Street. Britomart now stands where the old terminus used to be. The 1930 station was Auckland’s third rail terminus. It was the only station serving the CBD until 2003.
In July 2003, Britomart became the new terminus. However, one platform at the old station remained open. This was renamed The Strand Station. It served a few peak-hour suburban trains for a short time.
After that, The Strand Station was used for excursions and charters. But slowly it fell into disrepair. The platforms became overgrown with grass and weeds.
Fast forward to 2011. Auckland was preparing to host the Rugby World Cup. As a backup to Britomart, two platforms at The Strand Station were redeveloped. The canopies were removed from two platforms. A small section was left behind for historical reasons. The platforms were resurfaced and fitted with new amenities.
Interestingly, The Strand Station was never used during the Rugby World Cup. However, it remained a potential backup for Britomart. In 2013, stabling facilities were built to hold trains when they were not in use.
In 2014, the station was electrified. The Strand Station became the terminus for the Northern Explorer in December 2015. The Northern Explorer runs between Auckland and Wellington.
Platform 8 Restaurant now occupies the original foyer of the 1930s station. The local iwi, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, owns much of the land around the station. They have expressed a wish to rename the station Te Tōangaroa. Te Tōangaroa is the traditional name of Mechanics Bay.
The Strand Station stands as a testament to Auckland’s railway history. It is a reminder of the grand old days of train travel.
