The scent of plumeria hangs heavy in the air. Before you stands Saint Clement’s Church a testament to faith resilience and a touch of rebellion.

Founded in 1898 Saint Clement’s wasn’t always the tranquil sanctuary you see today. Its story begins with dissent. A disagreement within St Andrew’s Cathedral led to the creation of this independent chapel. Canon John Usborne a key figure established Saint Clement’s as a mission. Bishop Alfred Willis initially refused to recognize it. Saint Clement’s became known as The Episcopal Church at Large a bold statement of its independence.

This defiance shaped the church’s character. The current building erected in 1942 boasts high ceilings and wide-open sliding doors. These architectural features allow cooling breezes to flow freely a thoughtful design for Honolulu’s climate. The interior is charming. A late rendition of Carpenter Gothic with tropical overtones it replaced an earlier Arts and Crafts structure. Note the beautiful blue stained glass windows crafted by the Charles J. Connick Studio in Boston. They are a stunning focal point. Even the baptismal font is a family heirloom. It was created by Gordon Usborne son of the church’s founder.

Today Saint Clement’s is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community hub. Every Thursday afternoon church members host the Makiki Farmers Market. Locals gather to buy fresh produce and share stories. It’s a testament to Saint Clement’s enduring commitment to its community. It’s a place where warm welcomes are extended to everyone even well-behaved pets. A place where history rebellion and community intertwine. A place of faith and fellowship. This is Saint Clement’s Church.
