Wegweisersäule is German for guidepost. These pillars are historical waymarkers crafted from stone. For decades they showed travelers the correct path. These Wegweisersäulen are often listed as protected monuments.
Imagine weary travelers approaching this very spot. They sought reassurance they were headed in the right direction. The Wegweisersäule provided that certainty. It stood as a reliable guide in a world without GPS.
These columns are usually smaller than other stone markers. Their form sets them apart from milestones. Wegweisersäulen stand alongside postal milestones and boundary stones. They are historical witnesses to the evolution of travel.
In Saxony, where Dresden is located, rectangular Wegweisersäulen are common. Round columns are less frequent. Sometimes other columns were repurposed as Wegweisersäulen.
Initially, Saxony erected wooden signposts. Later, following an 1820 decree, communities built stone Wegweisersäulen. These regulations were in effect until 1934.
Distances were often measured in Wegstunden. One Wegstunde equaled 4.531 kilometers. Around 1900, kilometers became the standard unit. Some Wegweisersäulen displayed both units. Others showed no distances at all. They might feature the location’s name. The year of construction was sometimes carved into them.
Local sandstone was the usual material. Granite and porphyry were also used. The design reflected regional styles.
Around 1840, the “Kleine Meile” became the new standard. This shortened the mile from 9.062 kilometers to 7.5 kilometers. Consequently, older postal milestones became obsolete. However, Wegweisersäulen often remained useful. Not all of them displayed distances.
Over time, road changes rendered some Wegweisersäulen obsolete. Some were damaged. Others were removed. Improved signage eventually replaced these historical markers.
