Founded in 1897 as Blue Island Community High School, Dwight D. Eisenhower High School has a rich history. It was the first school in what would become Community High School District 218. The school received accreditation early on, in 1899, by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Imagine the scene in 1951. Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president of Columbia University, stood on the grounds of the newly built school on Sacramento Avenue, delivering the keynote address at its dedication. Years later, in 1962, the school was renamed in his honor, becoming the Dwight D. Eisenhower High School we know today. Eisenhower High School isn’t just about academics. It has a vibrant athletic program, competing in the South Suburban Conference and the Illinois High School Association. The Cardinals, as they are known, have a history of success. Their boys’ tennis team clinched the state championship in 1949-50 and took 3rd place in 1952-53. The boys’ track and field team boasts a state championship in 1954-55, a 2nd place finish in 1980-81, and several top-four finishes. The girls’ track team also achieved a 4th place finish in 1987-88. Even the wrestling team made its mark with a 3rd place win in 1955-56. Beyond sports, Eisenhower High School offers a diverse range of activities. From marching band and choir to the nationally ranked Cardinal Dance Team, there’s something for everyone. Students can explore their interests in clubs like Mathletes, Drama Club, and the National Honor Society. The school’s publications, the “Red & White” newspaper and “The Crest” yearbook, document student life and achievements. Eisenhower High School has a diverse student population, drawing students from Blue Island, Calumet Park, Robbins, Alsip, Merrionette Park, and Garden Homes. This mix creates a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Some notable alumni include Don Kolloway, a Major League Baseball player; Willie May, an Olympic silver medalist in hurdling; Douglas A. Melton, a prominent stem cell researcher; and Rick Rizzs, a well-known sportscaster. Their success stories demonstrate the caliber of education and opportunities available at Eisenhower High School.
