Tank Hill Park spans just 2.8 acres. However, its elevated position provides a unique vantage point. From here, you can see downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate, and even as far as Oakland and Berkeley on a clear day.
The history of Tank Hill is intertwined with San Francisco’s water supply. In 1894, the Spring Valley Water Company built the Clarendon Heights Water Tank here. This tank stored drinking water pumped from Laguna Honda. The city acquired the Spring Valley Water Company in 1930. This established the San Francisco Water Department.
Imagine the bustling activity around the water tank. Residents recall seeing goldfish swimming down Belgrave Avenue when the tank was drained in the 1950s. The tank itself was removed in 1957. Today, only the concrete foundation remains. It serves as a reminder of the hill’s past. Tank Hill got its name from this water tank.
In 1977, Tank Hill was officially established as a park. The San Francisco Parks Alliance supported a restoration project in 2001. The goal was to improve the environment for native plants. This involved clearing some mature eucalyptus trees. A compromise was reached to protect the remaining trees. This ensured the newly planted native trees could grow.
A separate project replaced the staircase and trail leading to the summit of Tank Hill. As you ascend, notice the rocky outcropping. This defines the north side of Tank Hill. It offers habitat for rare butterflies, snakes, lizards, and birds of prey.
Wildflowers add vibrant colors to the hillside from March through May. During an April visit, you might spot yellow, orange, pink, and purple blossoms. The 650-foot elevation offers breathtaking views. Mount Diablo looms in the distance across the bay.
Tank Hill is a popular spot for locals. Many gather here to watch municipal fireworks on the 4th of July. Crissy Field is the usual site for the main display. However, Tank Hill provides views of fireworks in Oakland and the East Bay as well.
