Journey with me to a land of contrasts, a place where industry hums alongside quiet residential streets. This is Brooklyn, a suburb of Melbourne, a mere 10 kilometers west of the city’s bustling heart. Brooklyn isn’t your typical tourist destination. It’s a place where the grit of industry meets the charm of community. Brooklyn recorded a population of 1,979 in the 2021 census. This small suburb, nestled between the Cities of Brimbank and Hobsons Bay, holds a unique story.

Brooklyn, once known as Brooklea, possibly named after a local home or farm, transformed over time. What was once a hub for quarries, wool stores, and meatworks evolved into a mix of logistics centers, car dealerships, and recycling facilities. Imagine the landscape in the 1920s. Picture wool stores being converted into emergency migrant hostels, housing thousands of immigrants after World War II. These hostels, located near meatworks like Borthwick’s and Smorgon’s, became a symbol of Australia’s promise to newcomers: “meat with every meal”.

Today, Brooklyn retains its industrial character. Companies like CEVA Logistics, HAG Import Corporation, and Novo Shoes have established their presence here. A former Huntsman chemical plant, now a heritage-listed site, stands as a reminder of Brooklyn’s industrial past. But Brooklyn is more than just factories and warehouses. The Federation Trail, a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians, begins right here in Brooklyn on Millers Road. Think of enjoying a leisurely stroll or bike ride along this trail, taking in the sights and sounds of this unique suburb.

Brooklyn also boasts several parks and reserves. D.N. Duane Reserve, Rowan Avenue Reserve, Kororoit Creek Reserve, and Brooklyn Reserve offer green spaces for recreation and relaxation. Brooklyn Reserve, with its playground, dog park, and barbecue area, is a perfect spot for families to unwind. Beyond the industrial landscape and green spaces, Brooklyn offers a glimpse into everyday Australian life. Small shopping strips on Geelong Road and Eames Avenue cater to the local community’s needs. A Community Centre and Tennis Courts on Cypress Avenue provide opportunities for social interaction and recreation.

Brooklyn may not have the glamour of Melbourne’s city center, but it possesses a distinct charm. It’s a place where history, industry, and community intersect, creating a unique tapestry. As you leave Brooklyn, remember its story. It’s a story of transformation, resilience, and the quiet hum of everyday life in a suburb that is both industrial and inviting.
