“A city within a city,” someone once whispered about Son Peretó. This intriguing neighborhood in Palma de Mallorca holds a unique story. Son Peretó wasn’t always the bustling suburb we see today. It began as the Son Peretó estate, also known as Son Castanyer, nestled within Palma’s old Vinyet. The estate’s boundaries were marked by Son Serra, Son Dameto, Camino de la Vileta, and Son Quint. Imagine Son Peretó transforming from a quiet estate to a vibrant neighborhood. Between 1964 and 1980, the land was divided and developed. The early days of this transformation were challenging. Son Peretó faced significant infrastructure problems, lacking paved roads, electricity, water, and sewage systems. This sparked a powerful residents’ movement, joining forces with Son Flor, demanding a comprehensive plan to address these shortcomings. It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that these issues were finally resolved. Today, Son Peretó stretches between Son Serra (Calle Zaforteza), Son Rapiña (Calle Bernardo Vidal Tomás), Camino de los Reyes, and Camino de la Vileta. In 2007, the population reached 1,615 inhabitants. The houses of Son Peretó were acquired by Palma’s city council as compensation. The intention was to transform these houses into sociocultural facilities. Son Peretó’s journey reflects the city’s own growth and resilience. It evolved from a rural estate into a dynamic neighborhood, overcoming early challenges to become an integral part of Palma’s urban fabric.
