“Cameras don’t take pictures. People do.” Does this resonate with you? Then you’re in the right place. Right in front of us stands the Museo Fotográfico Simik. It’s a hidden gem in the Chacarita neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

The Museo Fotográfico Simik isn’t your typical museum. It’s actually inside Bar Palacio. This unique setup makes it accessible to everyone. You don’t even need to buy a coffee to visit. The idea is that anyone can explore the history of photography.

Alejandro Simik, a professional photographer, founded the museum in 2001. He was a firefighter who became fascinated by photography. He started collecting old cameras at flea markets. Simik wanted to share his passion with others. In his own words, the Museo Fotográfico Simik combatted the depression. The economic crisis at the time meant there was little work. Instead of going to a psychologist, he entertained himself with something.

Inside the Museo Fotográfico Simik, you will find more than 4,000 photographs. Due to space constraints, they rotate the exhibits by era or theme. The collection also features over 600 antique cameras. Some date back to the 1870s. You’ll see wooden cameras with brass lenses. You’ll also find American and Argentinian daguerreotypes.

The Museo Fotográfico Simik also has a state-of-the-art studio. Here, photographers can work with various formats. It has large format cameras that use 10×12 plates. There are medium format cameras, and digital options too.

The Museo Fotográfico Simik also hosts cultural activities. These include monthly photography exhibitions. You can attend conferences and open classes. They offer free advice on black and white photography. Also, the Museo Fotográfico Simik is home to a club for antique camera enthusiasts.

The building was declared of Cultural Interest by the Buenos Aires legislature. This was in both 2005 and 2012. In 2011, Bar Palacio was declared a notable bar in Buenos Aires.

Before we move on let’s appreciate Alejandro Simik’s vision. He transformed a simple bar into a cultural hub. The Museo Fotográfico Simik preserves photographic heritage. It promotes artistic expression through cameras. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or simply curious, the Museo Fotográfico Simik offers something for everyone.
