Founded by former slaves in 1884 White Rock Chapel stands as a testament to resilience. This small white church near the intersection of The Dallas North Tollway and Belt Line Road in Addison has quite a story. Imagine five formerly enslaved families pooling their resources. They purchased land nineteen years after emancipation. They even convinced their former enslaver to sell them the land. He even helped them build the church. Both the formerly enslaved and their former enslaver worshipped together. What an incredible story of reconciliation.

Floods proved challenging. In 1918 the congregation relocated to higher ground. New buildings were destroyed by storms and fire. The current chapel nearly faced demolition. Dr Wesson and his family stepped in buying the property. They battled neighbors citing concerns about traffic noise and property values. The Addison town council initially denied their request to operate as a church. First Liberty Institute helped protect the church’s religious freedom. The council finally approved their request unanimously.

The Wessons plan a small in-person presence and a larger virtual one. They intend to preserve the history of White Rock Chapel. They want to continue the legacy of racial reconciliation. The church’s history is a rich American story. Neighbors initially resisted remembering this history. Now there is hope for a renewed future. The Wessons hope the community will join in restoring the chapel. White Rock Chapel’s story is one of enduring faith and hope. It’s a powerful reminder of overcoming adversity. It’s a beacon of unity for future generations. Let’s take a moment to appreciate this remarkable piece of history.
