Do you feel the chill in the air even on a warm day? It is a lingering echo of the icy South Atlantic waters that claimed the lives of 323 sailors. We are standing before the Marineros del Crucero General Belgrano War memorial. It stands as a solemn tribute to those lost in the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano.
This memorial commemorates the tragic event of May 2 1982. On that day the British submarine HMS Conqueror torpedoed the ARA General Belgrano. This Argentine Navy cruiser was formerly the USS Phoenix. The attack occurred during the Falklands War.
The ARA General Belgrano had set sail from Puerto Belgrano Naval Base on April 16 1982. It carried 1093 crew members. Their mission was to monitor enemy forces outside the exclusion zone imposed by the British. The initial Argentine assessment was that the British naval force was engaged in a landing operation. The cruiser and two destroyers formed Task Group GT 79.3.
On May 1 the cruiser received orders to attack the British fleet from the south. However the HMS Conqueror had already detected them.
On May 2 disaster struck. The submarine launched torpedoes. One struck the machine room. The other hit the bow destroying it almost completely. At 16:23 hours the order to abandon ship was given.
The sinking of the ARA General Belgrano remains controversial. At the time of the attack the cruiser was outside the British-declared exclusion zone. This fact has fueled debate ever since.
In the aftermath 770 crew members were rescued. The survivors faced harrowing conditions in the frigid waters. Many endured nearly two days in life rafts. Rough seas hindered their survival and rescue.
The rescue operation was a feat in itself. Despite the adverse weather a Neptune aircraft spotted the life rafts. The crews of the ARA Gurruchaga ARA Bouchard ARA Piedrabuena and ARA Bahia Paraiso all participated in the rescue.
The ARA Gurruchaga rescued 360 castaways more than four times its crew. The ARA Piedrabuena with 300 crew members saved about 270 sailors. The ARA Bouchard continued rescuing sailors. This was despite suffering engine damage.
The ARA Bahia Paraiso rescued the last 18 living crew members. They had been adrift for 43 hours about 100 km from the sinking site. By May 4 all 770 survivors had been recovered.
This memorial stands as a reminder of the human cost of conflict. It honors the courage and sacrifice of those 323 sailors who never returned home. Their memory lives on in the hearts of their nation. The Marineros del Crucero General Belgrano War memorial serves as a place for reflection and remembrance.
