Once upon a time, Elk Grove Village was just a dream. Now it stands before you. Imagine farmers tilling the land. This land is now a bustling center of commerce. Elk Grove Village started as a rural community. New England farmers first settled here in 1834. German immigrants followed. They shaped the area.
Fast forward to World War II. Douglas Aircraft built a plant nearby. They made military transport planes. After the war, Chicago bought the facility for one dollar. It became O’Hare International Airport. This airport boosted Elk Grove Village’s growth.
Elk Grove Village officially became a village in 1956. It was planned carefully. Centex Corporation built most of the houses. The village separated residential and industrial areas. This created the largest industrial park in the United States.
Many streets in Elk Grove Village bear the names of early farmers. Names like Busse and Landmeier echo through time. Busse Farm almost became a Chicago Bears stadium. Instead, it transformed into the Elk Grove Technology Park.
The village grew rapidly in the 1960s. It expanded south and west. New roads, schools, and parks appeared. Rupley Elementary was the first school. It honored Ira Rupley who helped develop the village.
In the 1970s, Elk Grove Village developed land west of the expressway. Apartment buildings rose along Tonne Road and Ridge Avenue. The 1980s saw continuous growth. Lively Junior High closed due to low enrollment. It became a recreation facility.
Elk Grove Village faced a dark moment in 1982. Mary Kellerman died in the Chicago Tylenol murders. This tragedy led to stricter FDA regulations.
The village revitalized in the 1990s and 2000s. They installed a clock tower at Village Hall. Brick crosswalks and retro street lights added charm.
Elk Grove Village became a leader in Illinois. It banned public smoking in 2006. Red light cameras followed in 2008. The Municipal Administration and Public Safety Complex earned LEED Gold certification.
Elk Grove Village boasts the largest consolidated business park in North America. Nearly 3,600 businesses operate here. They employ almost 100,000 people. The village even sponsored the Bahamas Bowl. Their slogan is “Makers Wanted.”
The business park has the largest concentration of manufacturers in the Midwest. It also has many data centers. These centers rely on fiber optic networks and natural gas lines.
Alexian Brothers Medical Center is a major employer. Other corporations include Apple Vacations and Illinois Tool Works. Elk Grove Village was named one of America’s best cities for global trade.
Don’t forget the elk. They live in a grove at Busse Woods. William Busse brought them from Montana in the 1920s. The Chicago Zoological Society cares for them.
