Who was Luísa Todi? Here stands a tribute to a voice that once echoed through Europe’s grandest halls. This Luísa Todi Bust;plaque marks the spot where a legend’s story continues.

Luísa Todi born Luísa Rosa de Aguiar was not just any singer. She was a Portuguese mezzo-soprano. Her voice captivated kings and queens. Born in Setúbal in 1753, she rose to become one of the most celebrated opera singers of her time.

Todi’s journey began in the musical theatre. At fourteen she performed in Molière’s Tartufo. In 1769, she married Francesco Saverio Todi. He was a Neapolitan composer and violinist. Francesco recognized her talent. He encouraged her to study with David Perez. Perez was a renowned composer.

Her debut in the Portuguese court came in 1771. She sang for the future Queen Maria I and King Pedro III. Her talent quickly gained recognition.

Luísa Todi’s international career took off in 1777. She performed at the King’s Theatre in London. Paris followed in 1778. By 1780, she was hailed as one of the best voices ever. Turin’s Teatro Regio contracted her as prima donna.

Todi graced the courts of Austria, Germany, and Russia. Catherine II of Russia showered her with jewels. In return, the couple wrote the opera Pollinia for the Empress.

A rivalry with Gertrud Elisabeth Mara divided critics. The “todistas” and “maratistas” took sides. Berlin welcomed Todi with open arms. Frederick William II of Prussia provided her with royal accommodations.

From 1792 to 1796, Madrid fell under her spell. In 1793, she returned to Lisbon. She sang at the baptism of a royal child. Special permission was needed. Public singing was forbidden for women then.

Luísa Todi ended her international career in Naples in 1799. She returned to Portugal. She sang in Porto in 1801. Her husband died in 1803. She wore mourning clothes until her death.

The Peninsular War brought misfortune. She lost her jewels in the chaos. Settling in Lisbon, she went blind around 1823. Luísa Todi died in 1833. She was eighty years old. A stroke had weakened her months before.

Anton Reicha called her “a singer for eternity”. Despite her fame, her final resting place lies beneath a building. It is a testament to time’s relentless march.

Setúbal honored her with a monument. Avenida Luísa Todi bears her name. Today, Luísa Todi’s legacy lives on. Her voice may be silent. But her story continues to inspire. This bust stands as a reminder. Greatness can emerge from the most humble beginnings.
