Andrés Guacurarí led the indigenous groups of Mesopotamia. He fought for a fairer society. Following Artigas’s ideals he implemented land reforms. His journey ended tragically. Captured while crossing the Uruguay River he was taken to Porto Alegre and then Rio de Janeiro. Accounts tell of brutal treatment. He was bound with fresh hides that tightened as they dried in the sun. He died in 1821 perhaps in a dungeon. Some say he was released and died in Uruguay. Others believe he returned to Misiones. His final resting place remains a mystery.
