Nestled along the Bosphorus, the Yeşilköy Bezmi Alem Cami, also known as the Dolmabahçe Mosque, stands as a testament to a queen’s vision. It’s a surprising blend of architectural styles, a place where East meets West in a symphony of stone and light. This mosque wasn’t originally intended to be the grand structure we see today. Queen Mother Bezmi Alem Valide Sultan commissioned it in 1852 as a smaller mosque. She sadly passed away a year later. Her son, Sultan Abdülmecid I, ensured its completion in 1855, expanding it into a magnificent tribute to his mother. The Yeşilköy Bezmi Alem Cami is unique. Its circular window design was a first in Ottoman architecture, a bold departure from tradition. The architect, Garabet Balyan, who also designed the opulent Dolmabahçe Palace, masterfully blended Baroque and Empire styles. This created a mosque unlike any other in Istanbul. The mosque’s main chamber is expansive, a perfect square measuring 25 meters on each side. Two slender minarets reach skyward, their single balconies resembling elegant marble columns. Imagine the grandeur of the original courtyard, now lost to road construction in the 1950s. The muvakkithane, the timekeeping house, was also relocated, a reminder of the changes time brings. The mosque even served as the Naval Museum between 1948 and 1961, a testament to its adaptability. The Yeşilköy Bezmi Alem Cami stands as a beacon of beauty. It reflects a pivotal era in Ottoman history, a time of evolving architectural tastes and a powerful empire’s embrace of change.
