Ever wondered where the iconic Buenos Aires subway trains go for their check-ups? Right here before you stands the Taller Polvorín a place steeped in history and the heartbeat of the city’s underground.

This isn’t just any train depot. Taller Polvorín is the oldest railway workshop in the entire Buenos Aires subway system. Built in 1914 by the Anglo-Argentine Tramways Company it served as both a workshop and a depot. Back then it was the bustling center of the city’s extensive tram network. The Anglo-Argentine Tramways Company owned a whopping 80% of the city’s tram lines. Taller Polvorín was the heart of this operation.

Imagine the scene in its early days. The clatter of trams the rumble of trains the rhythmic clang of tools. The air thick with the scent of grease and the faint whiff of burning wood from the La Brugeoise trains’ brakes. These wooden-braked trains were unique. They were capable of running on both tram and subway power lines. For almost a century these very trains traversed the tracks of line A. They were repaired washed and modified right here in the Taller Polvorín. Many spare parts were even handcrafted within these very walls.

The Taller Polvorín wasn’t just a repair shop. Its central location made it a starting and ending point for many tram lines. Until 1962 when tram services ceased in Argentina it was a busy hub. Then the focus shifted solely to the subway. However in 1980 the Asociación Amigos del Tranvía revived its historic tramway using a section of the original tracks leading to the workshop.

Remarkably this workshop holds a treasure trove of historical artifacts. Original lamps from the La Brugeoise trains—massive bronze pieces—were miraculously saved from being discarded. An old trolley pole a gateway from a tram platform. These items offer a glimpse into a bygone era. The Taller Polvorín is a living museum.

In 2008 the Buenos Aires Legislature declared the workshop a heritage site. This ensured the preservation of its history and the tracks connecting it to Primera Junta station which are now part of the historic tramway circuit. This preservation is a testament to the Taller Polvorín’s enduring legacy.

Even today the Taller Polvorín remains a vital part of the subway system. Though a modern repair facility is planned. Taller Polvorín continues its crucial role. It’s a testament to engineering craftsmanship and the city’s enduring spirit. This is more than just a workshop. It’s a piece of living history. It’s the heart of Buenos Aires’ underground. And right here you are standing in its presence.
