Hidden within the bustling campus of TU Dresden lies the Drude-Bau. Ever wondered about its story? The Drude-Bau stands as a testament to post-war reconstruction and architectural ingenuity. Constructed between 1950 and 1952, the Drude-Bau was designed by the talented trio of Walter Henn, Fritz Schaarschmidt, and Karl Wilhelm Ochs. This two-story building, with its 2051 square meters of usable space, showcases the functional and traditional design elements characteristic of the 1950s. Its sandstone and plaster architecture exudes a timeless charm. A notable feature of the Drude-Bau is its north wing. This wing houses a sloping lecture hall, complete with an experiment stage and seating for 111 students. Upon entering the Drude-Bau, you’ll be greeted by Reinhold Langner’s sandstone bas-relief, “Aus der Pflanzenwelt,” nestled within the door jambs. This intricate artwork depicts a harmonious blend of birds and plants. While the exterior of the Drude-Bau maintains a simple elegance, the adjacent garden, designed by Werner Bauch, adds a touch of vibrant life. These gardens, along with two greenhouses built in 1955, showcase the garden art of that era. Together, the building and its surrounding landscape form a cultural monument, recognized for its local historical, architectural, and garden historical significance. Originally home to the Institute of Botany, the Drude-Bau now houses the Institute of Hydrobiology at TU Dresden. The building’s namesake, Oscar Drude, was a distinguished professor of botany and rector of the university. The Drude-Bau isn’t just a building; it’s a living tribute to scientific pursuit and the enduring legacy of Oscar Drude.
