“If a man loves me, he will keep my words.” These are the opening words to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata BWV 74. This piece, known as Bach 74, holds a special place in the world of music. Bach 74 is actually a church cantata composed in Leipzig. It was composed for Pentecost. The cantata premiered on May 20, 1725.

Bach composed this cantata during his second year in Leipzig. The prescribed readings for the feast day were from the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of John. Christiana Mariana von Ziegler was the librettist for this work. She collaborated with Bach on nine cantatas after Easter 1724. For this cantata, she quoted the Bible three times. She took a quotation from the Gospel as a starting point in movement 1. Another one appears in movement 4. A quotation from an epistle by Paul is in movement 6. She concluded the text with a stanza from Paul Gerhardt’s hymn “Gott Vater, sende deinen Geist”.

The piece is scored for four solo voices. These are soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. It also includes a four-part choir. Three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, and an oboe da caccia contribute. Two violins, viola, and basso continuo round out the instruments.

Bach 74 consists of eight movements. The first movement is a chorus. Its text is “Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten”. This translates to “If a man love me, he will keep my words.” Next is an aria for soprano. It is followed by an alto recitative. A bass aria comes after that. Then there is a tenor aria. It is succeeded by a bass recitative. The seventh movement is an alto aria. The cantata concludes with a chorale.

The opening chorus is shorter than average. It is a reworking of the opening chorus from BWV 59. The original movement was a two-part vocal entry. The expansion relies on imitative pairings.

The second movement is a soprano aria with oboe da caccia. The new arrangement lends a childlike openness to the movement. The third movement is a short alto recitative. The bass aria uses sequences of treading quavers in the continuo line. This suggests a stepping motion.

The tenor aria is technically demanding. It is dominated by swirling string lines. The bass recitative is short and simple. It employs an unusual accompaniment of three oboes.

The alto aria has dense texture and rich scoring. It opens with a fanfare-like ritornello. Long melismatic passages follow with repeated notes in the instrumental parts. The closing chorale is a four-part setting of the melody of “Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn”. It is in a minor key. This creates a somber mood.

Bach 74 is more than just a piece of music. It’s a journey through faith and artistry. It showcases Bach’s genius. It also demonstrates the power of collaboration. This cantata continues to resonate with audiences today. It is a testament to Bach’s enduring legacy. Remember Bach 74. It is a profound expression of love. It embodies obedience to a higher calling.
