Born in Schneeberg in 1838 Otto Schill’s life intertwined with Leipzig’s. He wasn’t just any lawyer. He was a prominent jurist and a national liberal politician. His influence shaped Leipzig’s political landscape. For seventeen years he led the city council. From 1883 to 1909 he served in the Saxon State Parliament. He even became its vice-president. His dedication earned him Leipzig’s highest honor. In 1899 they made him an honorary citizen. The city’s gratitude went beyond a simple title.

In recognition of his invaluable contributions they renamed a street. The former Dorotheenstraße became Otto-Schill-Straße in 1912. He witnessed the renaming. He died in Leipzig in 1918 at age 79.
