Surely, St. Laurentius appears to be more than just a church. It seems a spiritual beacon for its community. Our Laurentius Parish came into being in 2006. This happened through the merging of three church parishes in Dresden’s northwest. Today, it includes the districts of Kaditz, Mickten, Pieschen, Trachau, Trachenberge and Übigau. It stretches from the Elbe in the south to the former vineyards in the north.

This parish is named after Saint Laurentius. He once said something profound. “The true treasure of the Church is the people in it.” That quote encapsulates the spirit we find here. The community thrives. It lives through the activities of its roughly 6,000 members. They are bound together by their shared faith.

The four churches are diverse. Similarly, the people here are diverse too. The parish is vibrant. Its events aim to include as many people as possible. These events welcome everyone regardless of skin color, gender, or religion. This inclusivity defines St. Laurentius.

The United Evangelical-Lutheran Laurentius Church Parish Dresden-Neustadt is significant. On New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025, something special happened. The Evangelical-Lutheran Church District Dresden-Neustadt. The Evangelical-Lutheran Laurentius Church Parish Dresden-Trachau embarked on a new joint future.

Initially, not much will change for the community members. Staff will continue to be available as usual. Services will remain a central part of community life. Groups will continue to meet in familiar places. The homepages of the previous church parishes will remain accessible for now. “Laurentius-Kirchgemeinde Dresden-Trachau” and “Kirchspiel Dresden-Neustadt” will be available.

Many churches bear the name St. Laurentius. They are dedicated to Saint Laurentius of Rome. These churches are often called Laurentius Church or Lorenz Church. Many St. Laurentius churches were built after Otto I’s victory. He triumphed over the Hungarians at the Battle of Lechfeld. Before the battle on August 10, 955, Otto made a vow. This was Saint Laurentius’s name day. If he won, he would build churches in the saint’s honor. Thus, the 10th and 11th centuries saw many such churches founded. These houses of God were dedicated to St. Laurentius.
