Did Father Cotham ever imagine the impact his mission would have? Here we stand before the Church of St John the Evangelist. It’s a testament to the rapid growth and changing needs of Walworth in the 19th century. The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1859-1860, arose from the simple need for more church space. St Mary, Newington, the parish church, was overflowing. The newer St Peter’s couldn’t handle the burgeoning population either. So, Father George Cotham, a curate at St Mary’s, took on the task of building a new church. This church, the Church of St John the Evangelist, was designed by Henry Jarvis, a prominent local architect. He designed it with strict economy in mind. The planned tower never materialized, replaced by a temporary timber belfry. From its inception, the Church of St John the Evangelist embraced the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Jarvis’s design, a blend of Gothic Revival with unusual details, reflected the prevailing architectural trends. However, many of his other South London churches have sadly been lost. The Church of St John the Evangelist stands as a rare survivor. This church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a vital community hub. Poverty and industrialization were increasing in Walworth. The church, along with missions like the Mission of St John’s College, Cambridge, offered crucial support to the poor and guidance to the young. Later, the Reverend Arthur Jephson, vicar from 1893 to 1908, continued this social mission, even providing “penny weddings” for local couples. Over the years, the Church of St John the Evangelist evolved. In 1912, a new vestry was added by the architectural firm Greenaway and Newberry. Later, Ninian Comper and others enriched the interior with beautiful fittings. Think of the intricate stained glass, the brass rood beam, the statues of saints. All these elements speak to the church’s rich history and evolving community. The Church of St John the Evangelist stands as a symbol of resilience, community spirit, and architectural significance in the heart of Walworth. It serves as a reminder of how a simple mission can blossom into a vital part of a community’s fabric.
