Wonga Park

Who was Simon Wonga? Wonga Park, a tranquil locality on the outskirts of Melbourne, owes its name to this remarkable figure. He was an elder of the Wurundjeri people, the original custodians of this land. Wonga Park sits 33 kilometers northeast of Melbourne’s bustling Central Business District. It’s nestled within the Cities of Manningham and Maroondah, and also the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The 2021 census recorded a population of 3,843. Imagine the area before Melbourne sprawled outwards. The Wurundjeri people lived here for over 40,000 years. Their connection to this land runs deep. Wonga Park wasn’t always a residential area. It began as a grazing property in the 1800s, named after Simon Wonga. The area was considered part of Mooroolbark until the 1890s. In the late 19th century, the Victorian Government established a settlement here for families struggling during the economic downturn. Many settlers were involved in the Eight Hour Day Movement. Initially, the settlement was called “The Eight Hour Day Pioneer Village Settlement.” It later became known as Wonga Park. This close-knit community faced many challenges. They cleared land, built homes, and established orchards and farms. This resilience shaped the character of Wonga Park. The Eight Hour Pioneer Settlement Post Office opened in 1902. It was renamed Wonga Park Post Office around 1907. The post office closed in 1989, but thankfully reopened in 1994 in its current location. Wonga Park played a role in the Scouting movement too. In 1942, Lord Clifford acquired the Yarra Brae grazing property within Wonga Park. He offered part of it for Australia’s first Pan Pacific Scout Jamboree in 1948. Clifford Park hosted another Jamboree in 1955 and remains a significant Scout campsite today. It’s available for use by other organizations as well. Wonga Park is more than just a suburb. It’s a place where history intertwines with community spirit. A place where the legacy of Simon Wonga and the resilience of early settlers continue to resonate.
