A symphony of whistles once filled this very spot. Let me tell you about the majestic Nyugati railway station. It is more than just a transport hub. It’s a vibrant center of Budapest life.

The Nyugati railway station, or Western Railway Station, stands as one of Budapest’s three main railway terminals. The other two are Keleti and Dèli. There is no northern station. The station’s name, Nyugati, simply means western in Hungarian.

Picture this. The year is 1877. The Eiffel Company, the same one that brought us the Eiffel Tower in Paris, completes Nyugati. Auguste de Serres designed it. The station replaced Hungary’s first railway station from 1846. This earlier station connected Pest and Vác. It was demolished to make way for the Grand Boulevard.

The new Nyugati was a marvel. Its steel train shed was constructed above the previous station. This ensured that train traffic wasn’t disrupted during construction. The finished building was a monumental combination of glass and steel. It became the biggest hall in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Step inside the Nyugati railway station. Look around. Notice the beautiful blend of brickwork and ironwork. Eiffel’s signature style is evident. It is similar to the Puerto Atocha railway station in Madrid. Alberto de Palacio Elissagne, who worked with Eiffel, designed that station.

Today, Nyugati is still a bustling place. The 4 and 6 trams stop right outside. They bring a constant stream of passengers. Metro line 3 also connects here. You can easily reach other parts of Budapest.

Hungry? Grab a bite at McDonald’s inside the station. It is located in what was the original station restaurant from 1877. Many consider it the world’s most elegant McDonald’s. Need to stock up? There’s a Spar supermarket across the road.

If you want to travel to other stations. Metro is the best way to transfer between Keleti, Deli, and Nyugati stations. Trams 4 and 6 are also an option. They run between Nyugati, Keleti and the Corinthia Hotel.

Nyugati has 17 platforms. They are numbered from left to right as you face the trains. Platforms 10 to 13 are in the original trainshed. They offer a magnificent experience.

Nyugati is a terminus. There’s easy level access to all platforms. There are no ticket gates. Access from street to concourse to platforms is free. Tickets are checked on board the trains.

Notably, the station has seen its share of the spotlight. Gwen Stefani’s music video for Early Winter was partly shot here. Key scenes from the movie Terminal were also filmed at Nyugati.

The Nyugati area is constantly evolving. Renovations have restored parts of the historic terminal. Further changes are planned. The London-based architectural firm Grimshaw is working on new designs.

So, as you stand here at Nyugati railway station. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Think of the countless journeys that have begun and ended here. This station is a true testament to Budapest’s rich past and vibrant present.
