This unassuming building, nestled in the heart of Shepherd’s Bush, is no ordinary school. Phoenix Academy has witnessed a dramatic transformation, rising from the ashes of its past to become a beacon of academic excellence. Before 1982, two single-sex schools, Christopher Wren Boys’ School and Hammersmith County Girls’ School, stood on these grounds. They merged to become Hammersmith School, but by the 1990s faced declining enrollment and educational standards. A devastating fire in 1991 only added to the school’s woes. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the school experienced a rebirth. Rebranded as Phoenix High School under the leadership of “superhead” William Atkinson, it underwent a remarkable turnaround. By 2007, The Guardian declared it the “most improved school” in the UK. Today, Phoenix Academy continues its legacy of progress. This small academy, managed by Future Academies Trust, is deeply committed to a knowledge-centered curriculum.
