Ever wondered what happens to London’s wastewater? Deephams Sewage Treatment Works is the answer. Located near Picketts Lock in Edmonton this massive facility plays a vital role in keeping London clean. For nearly a century Deephams has tackled the city’s sewage. It started small in the late 1800s as Edmonton Sewage Works. It was just a small farm then. The farm transformed into a sewage farm. It expanded greatly by the 1930s. Humus tanks sludge beds and filter beds were added. A network of tramways serviced this growing complex.

The Second World War briefly halted expansion. Work resumed in 1948 with major contracts awarded to prominent construction firms. The 1950s saw the introduction of diffused aeration a process that uses air to encourage bacterial growth. This innovation helped break down organic material. This revolutionary system improved wastewater treatment substantially. Deephams evolved. It grew bigger. Streams A B and C were added improving capacity and efficiency. The area of the works expanded to an impressive 86 acres.

By the 1980s and 90s upgrades continued. Storm flow screening improved the handling of excess water. A sludge digestion facility was constructed which helped create a valuable byproduct fertilizer. The 2010s saw further improvements to the inlet works and increased storm storage tank capacity.

Deephams also boasts a fascinating history of its own internal railway. A 2ft gauge railway operated from the 1920s until around 1968. Diesel and petrol locomotives helped transport materials around the vast site. A few of these locomotives still exist today preserved for posterity.

Today Deephams is one of Thames Water’s largest sewage treatment works. It serves a population equivalent of nearly a million people processing over 200000 tonnes of sewage daily. This amazing facility ensures that London’s wastewater is treated efficiently and effectively protecting the environment. The continuous upgrades at Deephams reflect a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It’s a testament to engineering innovation and its essential role in London’s infrastructure. The next time you’re in North London remember Deephams Sewage Treatment Works.
