Step into The Queen’s Orchard, a hidden haven in the heart of Greenwich Park. This enchanting space whispers stories of bygone eras, its history intertwined with the very fabric of the park itself. Imagine strolling through this beautiful orchard, a peaceful oasis where fruit trees grow alongside manicured vegetable patches, a testament to the resilience of nature and the dedication of volunteers who have shaped this haven.

The Queen’s Orchard has been an integral part of Greenwich Park since the 17th century. Its origins can be traced back to the reign of Charles II, when Sir William Boreman, the park’s keeper, began the methodical task of laying out the park’s avenues, including this area, originally known as the Dwarf Orchard. The mulberry tree in the middle of the garden stands as a silent sentinel, its roots reaching back to 1610. The tree witnessed centuries of change, from the 18th century when the grounds passed into Admiralty use to the 19th century when the Greenwich Hospital Trust took over.

However, the orchard remained relatively untouched, defying attempts to build houses on the site in the 19th century. Local opposition ensured the orchard remained untouched, escaping the fate of being transformed into housing developments. The Queen’s Orchard, a symbol of resilience and local community spirit, finally returned to Greenwich Park in 2007.

The Royal Parks, with the help of volunteers, breathed new life into the orchard. In 2011, a formal circular pond was constructed alongside a wildlife pond, and a variety of heritage fruit trees were planted. The vibrant tapestry of fruit trees represents a testament to the enduring spirit of its history; a reminder that nature and history are intertwined. Today, the Queen’s Orchard is a vibrant sanctuary where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature and learn about the rich history that surrounds them. The scent of blossom in springtime, a symphony of birdsong, and the rustling of leaves in the wind are just a few of the sensory experiences that will transport you back in time.
