The House of Music, Hungary transcends the conventional museum. It embodies a dynamic space that invites active participation. Here, you won’t just observe. You will immerse yourself in the very essence of sound. The experience here is fluid and organic. It mirrors the natural ebb and flow of life in the City Park.

Notice how visitors wander freely much like sound moves through space. It is unbounded resonating and ever-changing. This 21st-century museum is a harmonious extension of its environment. It blends seamlessly into the park’s landscape. Its ecological design complements the natural surroundings. It fosters an inclusive space for learning performing and sharing.

Inspired by the abundant trees of City Park, the museum draws parallels between its architecture and the forest canopy. The dense foliage forms a protective embrace with openings that allow sunlight to filter through. This motif is echoed in the House of Music, Hungary’s design. The interplay of light and shadow creates a sanctuary that is rooted in history and forward-looking. It celebrates the rhythm of nature alongside the universal language of music.

Designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, the building reflects nature. The early working title was Forest of Music. The shape of the perforated roof evokes images of pebbles thrown into a puddle and spreading sound waves. Seven trees reach skyward through holes in the roof.

The facade is a glass curtain made up of 94 glass panels each almost 12 meters high. This gives visitors the illusion that they are still wandering in the park. The feeling of being in nature is enhanced by a canopy of over 30000 decorative tree leaves set in the suspended ceiling. The building’s roof structure is inspired by sound waves. It has nearly 100 unique crater-like holes. These allow the trees to slip through while channeling light into the building.

The House of Music, Hungary has three levels. The upper floor functions as the building’s mind. It is home to digital archives a video and recording studio and a multimedia library. The middle floor is the body of the building. It consists of an auditorium and a concert hall. The underground floor houses a sound dome. A permanent exhibition called Sound Dimensions Musical Journeys in Space and Time is also on this level.

Inside the sound dome, light shows and graphics create a wide repertoire of surround sounds. There is even total silence. Visitors can wander wearing headsets with built-in GPS that provides information for where they are. There is also an installation modeled on Beethoven’s brain and a musical metro map.

The institution brings Hungary’s rich music traditions to visitors with interactive exhibitions. Concert spaces include indoor concert halls and an open-air stage. The glass-walled concert hall has a capacity of 320 seats.
