Established in 1721 Virum Skole boasts a rich history. Princess Sophie Hedevig sister of King Frederik IV founded this school. She wanted Virum to rival Lyngby’s prestigious riding school. The original school was small just a classroom and a teacher’s dwelling. Imagine two benches one for boys one for girls. It fell into disrepair. A new school opened in 1818 significantly larger. It too eventually needed replacing.

In 1920 a grand new Virum Skole opened its doors. Six classrooms welcomed 175 children. A large water tower stood proudly beside the school. The arrival of the S-train in 1936 brought a surge of students. The school expanded constantly to keep pace. In 1953 644 students transferred to Hummeltofteskolen. Virum Skole still remained a large school with about 1000 pupils.

The main building we see today opened in 1973. The summer holiday was extended by two weeks to complete construction. Some older buildings were incorporated into the final design finished in 1975. Virum Skole stood complete a testament to education in the community. In 2016 it ranked among the best schools in Denmark. This was based on student grades attendance rates well-being and teacher qualifications. Virum Skole’s success is due to its location in a well-to-do area supportive parents and experienced teachers. Virum Skole continues to thrive a beacon of learning in Virum.
