Hidden beneath the University of Mainz, a marvel of modern physics hums with power. The Mainzer Mikrotron, or MAMI, isn’t your typical tourist attraction. You won’t find grand facades or ornate statues here. But beneath the surface lies a world of scientific discovery. MAMI is a particle accelerator, a technological marvel that propels electrons to near-light speeds. Since 1979, Mainzer Mikrotron has been a cornerstone of nuclear physics research. It’s a multi-stage race track microtron, a design that cleverly uses magnets to guide electrons through a linear accelerator multiple times. This boosts their energy with each pass, making MAMI incredibly efficient. MAMI-C, the latest iteration, can accelerate electrons up to a staggering 1.6 GeV. This makes it one of Europe’s largest campus-based accelerators and a hub for international collaboration. Over 200 physicists from around the globe converge here. They unravel the mysteries of hadrons, those tiny particles made up of quarks and gluons that form the building blocks of matter. Mainzer Mikrotron’s continuous wave beam is a key advantage. Unlike other accelerators that deliver electrons in pulses, MAMI creates a constant stream. This allows for precise measurements, like capturing the energy of electrons with an accuracy of one hundred thousandth of the setpoint. The precise control extends to the beam’s position, maintained within just 200 micrometers. This level of precision is crucial for delicate experiments probing the very structure of matter. The Mainzer Mikrotron is not just a machine; it’s a testament to human ingenuity, a place where the invisible world is brought to light. It’s a hidden gem, powering breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe, right here beneath our feet.
