Founded in 1972 by Rex Gilfillan a visionary theatre lighting designer Theatrelight began its journey in Wellington. Gilfillan’s extensive experience in English repertory theatre the Welsh National Theatre and London’s West End provided a solid foundation. His first major project was the Hannah Playhouse later known as Downstage. The opening night in 1973 was a triumph showcasing the innovative high-quality products.
Demand soared. By 1977 Theatrelight outgrew its Wellington space. The company relocated to Auckland expanding its reach and influence. From there Theatrelight’s dimmers and control boards became indispensable in New Zealand’s iconic performance venues. Concert halls theatres and television studios all benefited from Theatrelight’s expertise. Even amateur theatres schools and drama rooms relied on its reliable equipment.
Theatrelight’s ambition extended beyond New Zealand. In the 1980s the company started exporting to Australia. Soon markets throughout Southeast Asia and beyond were eager to experience the quality and value Theatrelight offered. Today Theatrelight equipment is found worldwide its largest installation base is in China.
The company’s commitment to innovation continues. In 2015 Theatrelight embraced the LED revolution. Their range of Fresnel and Profile spotlights are cleverly designed. They offer high-end optic control while remaining affordable. These lights even grace television studios from TV3’s The Project to Lego Masters.
