Seminary Bible Fellowship Church connects to a rich history. Dallas Theological Seminary or DTS is nearby. DTS was founded in 1924 as Evangelical Theological College. Rollin T. Chafer and his brother Lewis Sperry Chafer started it all. They envisioned a school where expository Bible preaching reigned supreme.
Imagine those early days thirteen students gathered. They were eager to learn and spread the gospel. William Henry Griffith Thomas would have been the school’s first theology professor but sadly he died before classes began.
Under Chafer’s guidance DTS pioneered the Master of Theology or Th.M. It was one of the first four-year degrees in theology. The seminary’s current location was secured in 1926. Just a year later the Doctor of Theology or Th.D program began. Chafer led as president until his death in 1952.

John F. Walvoord took over as president after Chafer’s death in 1952. In 1974 DTS added a Master of Arts or MA program in biblical studies. A two-year program in Christian Education followed in 1982. The Doctor of Ministry or D.Min program opened in 1980. Walvoord retired in 1986.
From 1986 to 1994 Donald K. Campbell was president. During his time DTS launched an MA program in Biblical Counseling. Another two-year MA program in Biblical exegesis and linguistics was also created.
Chuck Swindoll led the seminary from 1994 to 2001. Mark Bailey followed serving from 2001 to 2020. Bailey oversaw the addition of an MA program in media and communication. Also a Spanish D.Min program and a multilingual online program were added. Mark Yarbrough succeeded him in 2020.
As of 2014 DTS boasted over 15000 alumni. These alumni served in many ministerial roles in 97 countries.
DTS is known for its dispensational teaching. This is due to Chafer’s systematic theology. He approached the Bible with a premillennial dispensational view. His eight-volume work Systematic Theology is still used today.
Key theological beliefs include premillennialism dispensationalism and Biblical inerrancy. The school is non-denominational within Protestantism. It offers classes on all 66 books of the Protestant Bible.
Many notable people are associated with DTS. A 2009 study named influential preachers. Three DTS alumni were in the top ten. They are Chuck Swindoll David Jeremiah and Andy Stanley.
