Did you know, right here at Southern Cross Campus, education is a family affair? Southern Cross Campus isn’t just a school. It’s a community hub woven into the fabric of Mangere East. Established in 1997, Southern Cross Campus represents a unique educational experiment. It merged three existing schools: Southern Cross Primary School, Mangere Intermediate School, and Nga Tapuwae College. This created a seamless educational pathway for students from Year 1 through Year 13. The campus is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the vision of Terry Bates, the first Campus Director, who saw the potential for a unified, thriving learning environment. Southern Cross Campus is deeply rooted in the Maori and Pacific Islands community, reflecting the vibrant cultural tapestry of Mangere East. The campus even houses Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae, a total-immersion Māori language school, further emphasizing the commitment to cultural preservation. Over the years, Southern Cross Campus has seen a succession of principals who have nurtured its growth and development. From Terry Bates to the current principal, Dr. Samantha Smith, each leader has left their mark. This institution has also been a launching pad for some remarkable individuals. Olympic shot-put champion Valerie Adams and rugby league players Ken Maumalo and Patrick Herbert all walked these halls. Southern Cross Campus continues to serve its community, not just as a place of learning but as a center for growth and connection. It’s a place where education transcends the classroom, shaping future leaders and fostering a strong sense of belonging.
