A weathered stern rises against a Fort Mason wall. This isn’t just any old piece of wood. This is the Brigantine Galilee. The name itself whispers tales of adventure.

The Galilee wasn’t just a ship. She was the smartest sailing vessel out of San Francisco. Built in 1891 by Matthew Turner a master boat builder she started as a packet ship. She zipped between San Francisco and Tahiti. Imagine the thrill of that journey!

But the Galilee’s story is more than just speed. In 1905 she became a research vessel for the Carnegie Institution. Scientists used her to study Earth’s magnetic field. They replaced her steel rigging with hemp ropes. They even built a new observation bridge. They wanted to minimize the ship’s own magnetic interference! This was vital for accurate measurements. The Galilee’s three scientific cruises covered tens of thousands of nautical miles.

After her scientific career the Galilee became a fishing vessel. Later she was a houseboat in Sausalito. She became part of the vibrant houseboat community that bloomed after the 1906 earthquake. Sadly she fell into disrepair. Eventually her stern was salvaged and moved to its current location. A part of her bow is at the Benicia Historical Museum.

Today you can see a piece of San Francisco history. You see a symbol of innovation and exploration. You stand before the stern of the Brigantine Galilee. A silent testament to a life at sea. A life of speed and discovery. A life that continues to fascinate and inspire.
