Contemplating the Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk, can you imagine the relief felt by the people of Buda when the plague subsided? This imposing monument before you is more than just a beautiful work of art. It is a symbol of gratitude and a plea for protection. The Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk stands tall in Trinity Square. This square marks the heart of Buda’s Castle District. The Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk got its name from the square it is located on.

The decision to erect the Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk was made in 1694. The Council of Buda wanted to protect its people. They hoped to prevent future outbreaks of the plague. The foundation stone was laid in 1700. Architect Ceresola Vereio and stone carver Bernát Ferretti completed the first statue in 1706.

However, in 1709, another epidemic struck. The original column was moved to Újlak. The magistrate then decided to erect a grander Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk. Sculptor Fülöp Ungleich created the column we see today. Antal Hörger crafted the reliefs and coat-of-arms. The Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk was inaugurated on June 11, 1713.

Look closely at the hexagonal obelisk. Statues of saints adorn its cornice. Saint Roch displays his wounds. Saint John holds a cross. Saint Christopher carries the child Christ. Saint Augustin holds a burning heart. Saint Joseph holds a lily. Saint Sebastian is depicted with arrows.

Beneath the cornice, three reliefs tell stories. King David prays in repentance. Another shows the horrors of the epidemic in Buda Castle. The third relief depicts the Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk itself. Coats-of-arms represent the Emperor, the town of Buda, and Hungary.

Above the statues, on three rims, stand the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and Saint Francis of Xaver. Angels’ heads decorate the upper part of the pedestal. At the very top is the Holy Trinity group. God the Father holds a scepter. The Son holds a cross. The Holy Spirit appears as a dove above them.

The Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk served as a reminder. It celebrated the end of the plague. Citizens hoped it would protect them from future epidemics. The sculpture at the top symbolizes the Holy Trinity. It rests on a sturdy pillar. The pillar is decorated with statues of little angels. Below, you can see large statues of saints. The column sits on a large pedestal. This pedestal is adorned with bas-reliefs and the Hungarian crest.

Today, the Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk remains a focal point. It is a testament to faith and resilience. It is a reminder of the city’s history. The Holy Trinity Statue Obelisk is a symbol of hope. It is a beautiful and meaningful landmark in Budapest. Take a moment to appreciate its artistry. Reflect on the stories it holds.
