Gazing upon Budapest’s skyline from this vantage point, do you feel the weight of history? Here stands the statue of Szent István király, King Stephen of Hungary. He is not merely a figure of bronze and stone. He is a symbol of a nation’s foundation.

Szent István, or Saint Stephen, was the first King of Hungary. He was crowned on Christmas Day in the year 1000. This marked the beginning of the Magyar state. Stephen’s reign was pivotal. He united the Hungarian people as a Christian citizenry. This often involved strong measures against those who resisted his faith. Despite this, his 40-year rule was largely peaceful and prosperous. He was beatified soon after his death in 1038.

The Szent István király statue commemorates this powerful monarch. It is a reminder of his significant impact. Several major Budapest landmarks bear his name. These include the colossal St. Stephen’s Basilica. You can also find his image on Hungary’s 10,000-forint banknote.

This statue stands gracefully on horseback within Fishermen’s Bastion. But another one stands near the entrance of the Cave Church on Gellért Hill. It shows a youthful Stephen beside his horse. A memorial also stands on Heroes’ Square among other statues of impactful figures. Szent István’s holds a leading position.

Every August 20th, Hungary celebrates St. Stephen’s Day. This national holiday honors the founding king. The day is filled with joyful festivities and sparkling fireworks. It commemorates the establishment of the Hungarian state.

The Szent István király statue here is more than just a monument. It is a work of art crafted by Stróbl Alajos and Schulek Frigyes in 1906. The bronze equestrian statue depicts King Stephen in royal robes. He wears the crown of Hungary and holds a double cross. The figure stands 4 meters high. The base is an additional 5.4 meters.

The base features circular medallions between pillars. Lions sit on the corners. The medallions display symbols. These are the Lamb of God, symbols of the Evangelists, and the double cross. The lower part of the base shows four reliefs. Each depicts significant moments from Stephen’s reign.

One relief depicts Stephen’s coronation. Saint Astrik crowns him in the presence of Queen Gisela. Another shows Stephen legislating. He sits on a throne with his son Emeric and Bishop Gellért. A third relief shows the building of a church. An architect offers the king a model. The final relief depicts the Vienna tribute. Stephen took Vienna in 1030.

Interestingly, Stróbl Alajos included friends and family in these scenes. Franz Liszt appears as a priest holding the double cross. The architect of Vajdahunyad Castle, Alpár Ignác, is a soldier with a shield. Even Stróbl’s mother is depicted with folded hands.

As you stand here, consider Szent István’s legacy. He shaped Hungary’s identity. His influence is still felt today. The Szent István király statue is a testament to his enduring impact. It serves as a powerful reminder of Hungary’s rich history. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry and the history. Feel the spirit of Szent István király.
