Perhaps you can hear faint echoes of a piano sonata as we approach the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. This isn’t just a building. It is a living monument to Hungary’s musical soul.

The Franz Liszt Academy of Music was founded in 1875 by Franz Liszt himself. It stands as the only institution bearing his name. Liszt himself played an active role in establishing it. Initially, it was known as the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music. Later, it became the College of Music. The name changed officially to Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 1925.

For over 140 years, the Academy has been a bastion of music teaching and musicology in Hungary. Its impact resonates through Hungarian and international music history. Many great musicians started here. Ernő Dohnányi, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály began their journeys within these walls. Later, György Cziffra, Annie Fischer and György Ligeti followed in their footsteps.

Replacing the Old Academy of Music, this Art Nouveau building opened in 1907. Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl designed it. Baron Gyula Wlassics commissioned it. He was the Minister of Culture at the time. Notice the facade is dominated by a statue of Liszt. Alajos Stróbl sculpted it.

Step inside and admire the frescoes and Zsolnay ceramics. Statues of Béla Bartók and Frédéric Chopin also grace the interior. Originally, stained glass windows by Miksa Róth adorned the building. The Grand Hall is renowned for its unparalleled acoustics. It is also famed for its Hungarian Art Nouveau style.

The Grand Hall’s design incorporates Greek mythology. It creates a unified whole that goes beyond simple opposition. The laurel tree motif dominates the room. It fills the space from floor to ceiling. Doric facades feature swans and lyres. They represent the Temple of Apollo. Higher up, angels play instruments associated with Apollo. Their music seems to come from another world.

Look for the Zsolnay globe in the foyer. Tradition says the spirit of music resides within them. Students often touch these orbs for luck before exams.

Since its reconstruction in 2013, the Franz Liszt Academy of Music has earned global recognition. It is both a university and a concert center. The reconstruction aimed to preserve the building’s art history. It revived the spaces to meet 21st-century requirements.

The Franz Liszt Academy of Music is located in the heart of Budapest. It stands blocks away from the Opera House. It is surrounded by stylish cafes and restaurants. The Liszt Academy is deservedly popular for its traditions. It is also known for its passionate methods of teaching. It continues to nurture tradition and create the music of the future.
