In 1660, King Louis XIV, wanting to establish his authority and suppress local uprisings in Marseille, commissioned the construction of two imposing forts. Boulevard Saint-Jean, our current location, stands proudly near one of these. Fort Saint-Jean, its namesake, dominates the northern entrance to the Old Port. Its cannons, ironically, were initially pointed inwards towards the city rather than out to sea, a clear message to the rebellious populace. Boulevard Saint-Jean, therefore, bears witness to a complex history. It whispers tales of a city yearning for freedom and a king determined to maintain control. The fort itself incorporates even older structures, showcasing layers of history. The 12th-century Commandry of the Knights Hospitaller, once a place of healing for crusaders, is now embedded within the fort’s walls. Nearby stands the 15th-century tower of King René I, a proud vestige of Provençal heritage. Boulevard Saint-Jean’s proximity to Fort Saint-Jean offers a captivating blend of old and new. In 2013, the fort became an integral part of the MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations). Two modern footbridges now link the fort to the historic Panier district and the MuCEM. Imagine crossing these bridges, your footsteps echoing the countless others who have walked this path. From the fort’s ramparts, the views are breathtaking. You can see the bustling Old Port, the majestic Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, and the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. Boulevard Saint-Jean and its neighboring fort offer a unique perspective on Marseille’s vibrant past. They serve as a reminder of the city’s strategic importance, its rebellious spirit, and its enduring connection to the sea.
