Amidst the whispers of history, Solymár Castle stands proudly. Solymár Castle is a partially reconstructed ruin. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area, making it a perfect spot for a family adventure. The castle’s story begins in 1266. A charter by Béla IV mentions the village of Solymár, then known as Solomar. The name likely derives from the Hungarian word “solymár” (or “solymász”), meaning “falconer.” This suggests the area was once home to royal falconers. The village thrived for centuries. It possibly housed a royal hunting castle called Szarkavár, which unfortunately burned down after 1561. The Ottoman Empire’s advance left Solymár deserted after 1580. Around 1700, new settlers began to arrive. Serbians and Bulgarians sought refuge from the retreating Ottoman forces. Soon after, Bavarian immigrants joined them, encouraged by the monarchy to repopulate and cultivate the land. These newcomers, known as Danube Swabians, preserved their German language and traditions. World War II brought turmoil to the region. Many ethnic Germans were expelled from Eastern European countries after the war. Solymár was no exception. In 1946, about half of its population was deported to Germany. Ethnic Hungarians from other parts of the country, including Transylvania and Czechoslovakia, filled the vacated homes. Today Solymár Castle offers visitors a glimpse into this rich and layered past. The hilltop ruins evoke the castle’s former grandeur. While exploring the castle grounds, imagine the royal falconers training their birds. Picture the bustling village life before the Ottoman invasion. Solymár Castle serves as a reminder of the enduring power of history. It shows how a place can be shaped and reshaped by the passage of time.
