Why did the residents of Wayzata take their own town off the map? It might sound absurd, but the story of the Historic Wayzata Train Depot hinges on this very act of defiance. The charming depot that sits before you, a picturesque blend of red brick and English Tudor charm, wasn’t the first to grace this spot. It represents the ultimate victory in a battle of wills between a small town and a railroad tycoon. You see, the saga began in 1867 when the Saint Paul and Pacific Railroad first chugged into town. That first depot, further east, sparked a conflict as the railway grew, threatening to choke the town’s heart. Enter James J. Hill, the “Empire Builder,” who relocated the tracks and erected a new station. The catch? He moved it a mile east and named it “Holdridge.” Wayzata, in essence, vanished from the railway map. The citizens, refusing to be sidelined, took the railroad to court and won. A chastened, albeit reluctant, Hill conceded. In 1906, he unveiled the Historic Wayzata Train Depot, a grand gesture of reconciliation. This time, no expense was spared. The depot boasted modern amenities like indoor plumbing and a water fountain, a true testament to Wayzata’s triumph and Hill’s grudging respect. For decades, it thrived as a gateway to Lake Minnetonka, bustling with tourists and traders. Today, the trains may no longer stop here, but the Historic Wayzata Train Depot remains a symbol of the town’s resilience, a reminder that even the smallest of towns can challenge giants and shape their own destinies.
