Once a beacon of hope rose in West Ham. It was named the Church of the Ascension, Victoria Docks. Today, we explore its history and significance.

The Church of the Ascension started as a mission hall in 1887. St Luke’s Church oversaw it initially. Later, the Felsted School Mission took charge. Previously, they had worked in Bromley.

Between 1903 and 1907, a new church building emerged. A separate parish was formed in 1905. It split from St Luke’s. In 1909, the new parish established a mission house. This was for women workers.

Mabel Knowles led the St Luke’s Mission Church from about 1924. This was in London’s Victoria Docks. Knowles was a prolific writer. She penned over 300 books. She led the mission for 25 years. Knowles died on November 29, 1949. She was preparing a mission service for women at the time.

During World War II, clergy from the Church of the Ascension assisted Sandon parish. This was near Chelmsford. Their rector, Eric Leicester Andrews, was captured by the Japanese. This happened during the fall of Singapore in 1942.

In 1961, the Church of the Ascension expanded its reach. It took over the area of St Matthew’s Church, Custom House. That church had closed the previous year. It was also deconsecrated.

The Church of the Ascension welcomed Christians. It also welcomed those seeking to understand Christianity. This was in the London area. Its aim was to connect with others. It encouraged them to join in a life-enhancing Christian journey.

Ascension at London was a friendly Christian community. It welcomed others to join in worship and service to God. The emphasis was on learning and understanding the Bible. Following the example of Jesus was vital. So was following his disciples.

The vision of the Church of the Ascension was impactful. It sought to make an impact for God in London. It helped people understand the messages of eternal hope. Jesus Christ gave these messages. He gave them through His words and deeds. All were welcome to come as they were. The community wanted to get to know them better.

Today, the Church of the Ascension stands. It is a testament to faith. It is also a testament to community. It has evolved over the years. Yet, its core mission remains. It offers hope and fellowship.
