Ever felt the pulse of a town’s history? Midlothian Texas invites you to do just that.

Midlothian is more than a city. It’s a living testament to Texas’s rich past. Its story begins long before its official incorporation in 1888. Long before the railroads arrived. Even before Ellis County itself existed.

Imagine the Tonkawa people. They were among the earliest inhabitants of this land. They hunted here alongside the Anadarko Bidai Kickapoo and Waco tribes. Their lives were interwoven with the landscape. Their presence shaped this very ground beneath our feet. Then came the Peters Colony. A land grant company from Louisville Kentucky. They brought more settlers to this region. Many came from the southern states. They brought their farming methods and traditions. Sadly some brought enslaved people too.

The Hawkins and Newton families arrived in 1848. They built homes. They claimed land. They established roots in this burgeoning community. William Alden Hawkins built his house before the July 1 1848 deadline. He secured his 640 acres along Waxahachie Creek. Larkin Newton also met the deadline. He brought his wife Mary and eight children. They too built a life here. William Larkin Hawkins a grandson of William Alden Hawkins built a house in 1903. This house stands as a recorded Texas Historic Landmark.

Ellis County itself wasn’t officially established until December 20 1849. General Edward H Tarrant sponsored the bill. He was a popular Texas Ranger and Indian fighter. The county was carved out of Navarro County and named for Richard Ellis.

The name Midlothian arrived in 1883. Legend says a homesick Scottish engineer gave it its name. He saw the countryside and remembered Scotland. Midlothian also marked the midpoint between Dallas and Cleburne and between Ennis and Fort Worth. The railroad spurred growth. The town incorporated a few years later.

Midlothian today thrives as the cement capital of North Texas. Three major cement plants operate here. Gerdau Ameristeel a large steel factory also calls Midlothian home. These industries fuel the city’s economy. Yet Midlothian also invests in its future. It’s building a vibrant downtown. Expanding its parks and improving its schools. Midlothian continues to grow. It’s a dynamic blend of old and new. Its past resonates in its present.

Midlothian. A story etched in both cement and dreams.
