Originally named Doran’s Point Overlook, this area now known as Flag Pole Hill Park holds more than just scenic views. More than 400 acres for the northern area of White Rock Lake was acquired from Church Goforth. This included the land we stand on. The park’s history stretches back to the early 1900s. It served as a military training ground.

William Doran a city commissioner negotiated with landowners to acquire land for White Rock Lake. The roadway going up and around Flag Pole Hill is Doran Circle. Because of its high elevation, Flag Pole Hill was ideal for radio towers. The building closest to the towers was utilized by WRR. Today, it serves as our reservation office.

Oddly enough, some believe Flag Pole Hill Park is haunted. Legend tells of a young soldier killed in the line of duty. Some claim his ghost still roams here searching for his killer. Visitors have reported strange noises like footsteps and whispers in empty areas. Others speak of ghostly apparitions, such as a woman in a white dress or a man in military uniform lurking in the shadows.

In the late 1950s, this area looked quite different. The point across Northwest Highway was marked by water. Today, it’s edged with trees. The southern extension of White Rock Trail wasn’t built through the park yet. What is now Lanshire was originally Mockingbird Lane. Before the Mockingbird bridge, Mockingbird flowed into West Lawther.

The land where the dog park is now, Mockingbird Point, didn’t exist until later. It was created through dredging in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

More recently, Flag Pole Hill is getting a new playground. It will be a state-of-the-art playground that all families can enjoy. The re-designed playground focuses on all-inclusive elements. These elements are designed to accommodate children on the Autism spectrum for alone play. They also address mobility issues for caregivers, like grandparents. Parts of the playground will be constructed beneath trees. This will provide shade on hot summer days. The mosaic of different surfaces and textures encourages children of different ages to play with each other. It encourages learning and cooperation. Construction of the Flag Pole Hill playground will be paid for through a combination of 2017 Bond Funds and gifts from local organizations.
