Can you believe that this bright yellow, geometric sculpture, soaring high above us, is actually inspired by an F18 jet breaking the sound barrier? It’s called Supersonic and it’s the work of Sydney-based sculptor Dion Horstmans. The sculpture, created in 2013 and standing tall in Collins Square, Docklands, is an electrifying installation that encourages interaction within this public space. It’s made up of over 100 separate pieces of welded tubular steel, weighing in at a staggering 56 tonnes, spanning approximately 80 metres in length. The installation took three months to install, but the result is truly worth the wait. Supersonic breaks the sound barrier of public art, not just in its size, but also in its vibrant color and bold design. The sculpture is more than just a landmark; it’s a symbol of innovation and a testament to the power of art to transform public spaces.
