Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom

“Lost souls seeking solace, did they find it here at the Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom?” I ask, gesturing to the imposing structure before us. The Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom stands as a testament to Budapest’s resilience. It’s a beacon of faith in the heart of the Víziváros district, a prominent feature of Batthyány Square, and an undeniable part of the Buda riverfront’s charm. Construction began in 1740, under the watchful eye of master builder Hamon Kristóf. The sanctuary was completed first, in 1746, and temporarily served as the church itself. Tragedy struck in 1748 when Hamon passed away. His journeyman, Máté Nőpauer, married his widow and bravely continued the work. Nőpauer finally completed the Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom in 1761. However, fate tested the church once more. An earthquake in 1763 caused significant damage. Hamon János, son of the original architect, stepped up to restore the church his father had begun. The façade sculptures were installed, along with six new altars. By 1773, the magnificent altarpiece, created by Károly Bebo, was in place. It depicts St. Anne presenting the child Mary at the temple, a fitting tribute to the church’s namesake. The church’s consecration, though, wouldn’t happen until 1805. This ceremony was officiated by György Márton, general vicar of the Esztergom archdiocese. This delay was partly due to the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773. After the Jesuits’ departure, secular priests appointed by the city council oversaw the church. Adding to the rich history of Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom, the organ from the Buda Carmelita church found a new home here in 1784, following the dissolution of the Carmelite order. The church’s story doesn’t end there. In the mid-20th century, the construction of the metro threatened the Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom with demolition. Fortunately, these plans were abandoned, allowing this historic church to remain a cherished part of Budapest’s landscape. Through earthquakes and near-demolition, the Felsővízivárosi Szent Anna-templom has persevered, a testament to the enduring spirit of Budapest and the faith of its people.
