Ever wondered where Argentina explores the peaceful uses of nuclear energy? That’s at CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza. Here at CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza, Argentina’s nuclear research and development come to life.

The Comision Nacional de Energia Atomica or CNEA was created in May 1950. Its mission was to develop and control nuclear energy. The goal was peaceful applications within Argentina. CNEA’s facilities are located across the country. They include the Bariloche Atomic Center. Another is the Constituyentes Atomic Center. And of course, the Ezeiza Atomic Center where we stand.

Since its beginning, CNEA emphasized professional training. This was focused on sciences and technologies. They were associated with nuclear activities. CNEA created laboratories. These labs supported radio chemistry and nuclear metallurgy. Uranium mining was also a key focus.

CNEA built and operated research reactors. These reactors produced fuel. They also produced radioisotopes. These isotopes had medical applications. Argentina produced eight percent of its electricity with only two nuclear power plants. It mastered the fuel cycle.

Argentina is a leader in radioisotope production. CNEA produces molybdenum-99. It exports radioisotopes like iodine-131. Cobalt-60 is also exported. These are needed for cancer treatment.

Here at CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza, the RA-3 reactor produces around four percent of the world’s molybdenum-99. This is a crucial radioisotope. It is widely used in nuclear medicine.

But that’s not all. The CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza also has a semi-industrial irradiation plant. It provides industrial-scale services. It sterilizes tissues for grafts and implants. It also sterilizes medical and pharmaceutical products. This plant decontaminates food too. It prolongs its shelf life. The laboratory of Harmful Arthropod Management studies the impact of low doses of ionizing radiation. These come from Cobalt-60. This preserves materials. Wood, leather, paper and organic products are preserved. These items are often attacked by pests.

CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza also focuses on cultural heritage recovery. They use radiation to disinfect books and artwork. This protects them from pests.

The CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza is building the RA-10 multipurpose reactor. This will boost radioisotope production. It will also enhance exports. The RA-10 will have facilities for material research. This research will use neutron diffraction.

Argentina seeks to expand its radioisotope production. The current production uses the RA-3 reactor. The new reactor will be the most modern of its kind. José Luis Freijo is in charge of the RA-10 construction. He says it will allow projects in fuel development. It will also allow nuclear material testing. The goal is to increase the country’s experience. They want to expand services to the world market.

Here at the CNEA – Centro Atómico Ezeiza, science meets application. It is a place where Argentina’s nuclear future is taking shape. From medicine to industry, CNEA’s work impacts many aspects of life. It is a testament to Argentina’s commitment to peaceful nuclear technology.
