Dreamt of as a hallmark of greatness, the Philippine International Convention Center stands before us. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to Filipino artistry and ambition. The Philippine International Convention Center, or PICC, was Asia’s first international convention center. Its story began with President Ferdinand Marcos. He signed a decree in 1974 to construct this center.
The goal was to make Metro Manila a Southeast Asian financial hub. Leandro Locsin designed the PICC. He later became a National Artist for Architecture. Construction took only 23 months. The Philippine International Convention Center officially opened on September 5, 1976. It was in time for the 1976 IMF-World Bank Meeting.
The Philippine International Convention Center is composed of several building modules. These are the Delegation Building, Secretariat Building and Plenary Hall. The Reception Hall and The Forum are also key parts. The entire facility spans 12 hectares. It features 38 meeting rooms.
Inside the Philippine International Convention Center, art and history intertwine. “Ang Pagdiriwang” greets visitors in the Main Lobby. This huge Jose T. Joya painting measures 5.5 x 7 meters. Joya painted it onsite because it was too large to move. Arturo Luz’s “Anito” stands in the Courtyard. It is a stone sculpture created on the very spot where it now resides.
The Philippine International Convention Center has hosted many significant events. The canvassing for the 1986 Presidential Elections took place here. A walkout by tabulators triggered the People Power Revolution. The Philippine International Convention Center has also welcomed musical icons. Janet Jackson, Luciano Pavarotti and many more have graced its stage. Even DJs like Tiesto have performed here.
Look up at the Reception Hall chandeliers. These grape-like fixtures came from Prague. Each of the 7000 globes must be individually cleaned. The Philippine International Convention Center continues to evolve. A new building is planned to host trade exhibits and offices. The Philippine International Convention Center also houses a satellite office of the Professional Regulation Commission.
The Philippine International Convention Center has adapted to modern needs. It upgraded its Wi-Fi and technology for virtual events. The Philippine International Convention Center also prioritizes safety. It strictly implements health protocols. The Department of Tourism awarded it a Safety Seal.
