Was it a silent sentinel? Battery Drew stands on Angel Island as a testament to a bygone era. It whispers tales of coastal defense. It beckons urban explorers to uncover its secrets.

Battery Drew’s story begins in the late 19th century. The United States recognized the need to modernize its coastal defenses. This led to the Endicott Period. Battery Drew was part of this initiative. Construction started in 1898. It finished in 1900. The project cost $34,836.82. This reflected the significant investment in national security.

Battery Drew was transferred to the Coast Artillery on May 1, 1900. Its role was coastal defense. It protected San Francisco Bay from naval threats. Military technology advanced rapidly. This rendered many installations obsolete. By 1915, the Army declared Battery Drew obsolete.

Battery Drew had an 8-inch M1888MII breech-loading rifle. It was mounted on an M1892 barbette carriage. The barbette carriage kept the gun in a fixed position. This allowed for faster reloading. It offered less protection for the crew. Munitions were stored on the same level as the gun. So, the battery lacked shell and powder hoists. A 10 hp Hornsby-Akroyd oil engine powered an electric plant. It provided lighting.

Battery Drew was named after First Lieutenant Alfred W. Drew. He was killed in action in the Philippine Islands in 1899. The naming honored his service and sacrifice.

The decommissioning of Battery Drew resulted from military technology and defense strategies. Fixed coastal artillery positions were less effective during World War I. Modern naval vessels and warfare made them obsolete. The U.S. military shifted its focus. The gun at Battery Drew was ordered dismounted on August 24, 1917. It was removed on December 31, 1917. The gun tube was shipped to Watervliet Arsenal. It was listed as “Being Salvaged” on July 28, 1942. The carriage was scrapped at Fort McDowell on October 21, 1918.

Today, Battery Drew offers a glimpse into the past. Its concrete structures and gun emplacements are still visible. You can explore the site via hiking trails. These trails offer scenic views of the bay.

Remember to explore with respect and caution. Battery Drew is a protected landmark. Adhere to park regulations. Avoid causing damage. Prioritize safety. This ensures the site remains preserved.
