Why is everyone learning sign language at Brimsdown Primary School? Don’t worry, you haven’t stumbled into a school for the deaf. Brimsdown Primary School, located right here on Green Street, is a regular primary school for kids aged 3 to 11. But they’ve done something extraordinary to foster inclusivity. Brimsdown Primary School teaches every single student British Sign Language. This initiative began as a way to make their deaf students feel fully integrated. Imagine the impact: instead of feeling different, these students see their classmates signing right alongside them. This practice not only breaks down communication barriers but also instills a deep sense of empathy and understanding in all students. The school has been lauded for this and other initiatives. In fact, in its most recent Ofsted inspection, Brimsdown Primary School received an overall rating of ‘Good’. They even received an ‘Outstanding’ grade for their early years provision and for the behavior and attitudes of their students. It seems learning sign language is just one of the many ways Brimsdown Primary School goes above and beyond to create a positive and enriching environment for its 519 pupils.
