You might think Burnsville is just a quiet suburb south of Minneapolis, but there’s a lot more to this town than meets the eye. This city, founded in 1855, was originally a rural Irish farming community. William Byrne, an Irish immigrant who arrived in 1840 from County Kilkenny, Ireland, settled in the area. He donated land for a church, school, and cemetery, and even served as Town Chairman. This settlement eventually became the town of Byrnsville, named after the prominent settler. The name was misspelled as Burnsville when the town incorporated into a city in the 1960s, a mistake that has stuck ever since. You see, Burnsville has a rich history that unfolds right in front of you. Now imagine the Mdewakanton Dakota people, who were the original inhabitants of the area. They lived here long before the European settlers arrived. They followed the migrating geese and deer along the Minnesota River and established their village at the isthmus between Black Dog Lake and the Minnesota River. Can you picture this? Today, the site of their village is near Black Dog Lake, where the Black Dog Power Plant now stands. You can still see a ghost of the past. In 1851, the Dakota nation ceded land, including this area, and many relocated to a reservation near Prior Lake, Minnesota. However, some traces of the past remain. But Burnsville’s evolution didn’t stop there. In the 19th century, Burnsville had become a resort town, with several lakes, including Crystal Lake, nestled amidst the scenery. Cottages were built around these lakes, and the residents would enjoy the peaceful lakeside life, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. In the 1950s, Burnsville was a quiet township with a limited population of 583 people. Only a one-room schoolhouse served the community.
But things changed rapidly after the construction of Interstate 35W in the early 1960s. This brought an influx of new residents from Minneapolis. Burnsville grew quickly and by 2000, the population had risen to about 60,000 people. As the city grew, it needed to find creative ways to deal with the changing landscape. The Burnsville Center opened in 1977. The center attracted shoppers from all over the region, transforming Burnsville into a suburban shopping destination. In the 1990s, Burnsville underwent redevelopment, focusing on creating a vibrant and modern downtown area called “Heart of the City”. The city’s development has transformed Burnsville into a thriving city. You see, it’s not just a quiet suburb. Burnsville is a city of vibrant cultures and history waiting to be discovered.
