Considering a symbol of struggle and resistance against racism in Brazil? That’s Estádio Vasco da Gama, also known as São Januário. It stands proudly in the Vasco da Gama neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.
Estádio Vasco da Gama is more than just a stadium. It is the home of Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama. Its location on a street of the same name gives it its popular nickname.
In 1923, Vasco da Gama won its first Campeonato Carioca. The team was made up of black players and workers. They were known as Camisas Negras meaning Black Shirts. Other clubs then created a new league. They tried to exclude Vasco. They demanded Vasco dismiss twelve of its black athletes. They claimed the athletes had a “dubious profession”. They also said Vasco did not have its own stadium.
Vasco’s president, José Augusto Prestes, responded. His letter became known as the “Historical Response”. He refused to submit and withdrew from the league. The club overcame this resistance. They rejoined the league. However, they had to play their games at Andarahy Athletico Club. Vasco decided to build its own stadium to end these demands.
Supporters raised funds to buy land in São Cristóvão. It was similar to Vasco’s foundation site. On April 21 1927, Estádio Vasco da Gama opened. It was the largest stadium in the Americas until 1930.
Brazilian President Washington Luís attended the opening. The first match was between Vasco and Santos. Santos won. Yet the stadium remains the biggest private venue in Rio de Janeiro. Two years later, the stadium’s lights were inaugurated. It became the only club in Brazil with a stadium for night games.
Estádio Vasco da Gama has seen many important events. Getúlio Vargas, the Brazilian president, often gave speeches here. He even announced Brazil’s first work laws from its tribune.
In 2007, a bronze statue of Vasco idol Romário was placed in the stadium. In 2022, a statue of Roberto Dinamite was also inaugurated. These statues honor the players’ contributions to the club.
Today, Estádio Vasco da Gama is still a vital part of Rio de Janeiro. It is a testament to the power of perseverance. It symbolizes a club’s commitment to its values. It is a place where history continues to be made. A renovation project was approved in June 2024 and sanctioned in July 2024. The capacity will be around 48000 fans. There are also plans to increase it to 57000.
